High blood sugars can damage arteries, and increase oxidation stress and inflammation. Inflammation can increase LDL levels due to decreased LDL receptors' activity. Inflammation also increases the permeability of blood vessels, allowing LDL particles to make their way into the sub-endothelial space. This is where the atherosclerotic process can begin. We can improve our blood sugar control and improve our heart health by: - Having balanced meals, with sufficient protein, whole-food carbohydrates, healthy fats, and non-starchy vegetables. By prioritizing these sources of food, we will increase our intake of key nutrients that are required for optimal heart health. - Doing resistance training to increase and maintain muscle mass is important for both blood sugar control and cardiovascular health. What Our Cells Need to Start Reversing Type 2 Diabetes & Rheumatoid Arthritis! #jeremiahfariasrdn
.Type 2 diabetes can be characterized as a state where the cells of the body can no longer use or oxidize glucose. Various cells of the body are insulin-resistant. As a reminder, insulin is a hormone that is released by the beta-cells of the pancreas. Insulin does a number of things in the body, but namely, it allows glucose into the cell and supports glucose oxidation in the cell, it also signals the liver to not produce glucose and release it into the bloodstream. However, in the state of insulin resistance, the cells' ability to oxidize glucose is impaired and the liver releases glucose into the bloodstream through increasing the processes of gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. This is how Excessive ROS production can drive Rheumatoid Arthritis! The authors stated: “The reactive oxygen species synthesized in mitochondria, also known as mtROS, is mainly generated due to proton leakage in the electron transport chain.” So, ROS are molecules that can cause damage in excess. The production of mitochondrial ROS is mainly generated due to proton leakage in the ETC. What I want you to know is this: Proton Leakage drives the production of mitochondrial ROS, and in previous videos I reviewed how when the membranes of our cells and mitochondria are composed of PUFAs, there is greater proton leakage. The authors had this to say about the first point on impaired energy metabolism: “Mitochondria are indispensable for the energy supply of chondrocytes due to their essential physiological function of producing ATP from glucose.” If you cannot turn glucose into ATP (cellular energy), which is the same issue seen in T2DM, you cannot nourish the chondrocytes (which are the cells that make up the cartilage in our joints). Without proper nourishment, you will have degradation of the tissues. How Impaired Energy Metabolism Drives Rheumatoid Arthritis!! #jeremiahfariasrdn
I believe impaired energy metabolism is at the root of both RA and type 2 diabetes. To make this point, we can look at the presence of mitochondrial dysfunction in both of these conditions. One paper stated, “In RA, the most severely damaged cells are chondrocytes and synovial cells. If the mitochondrial function in these two types of cells is disrupted, it will lead to the dysfunction of cell physiology, and then trigger RA.” PMID: 36139055 This same paper highlighted 3 ways that mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to RA. They include: 1. Impairing Energy Metabolism 2. Excessive ROS Production 3.
