The Fall: When We Broke the Story

Storyline: Finding Your Place In God's Plan - Episode 2

Transcript

Opening

“You messed up — maybe big time.”

“And now you’re wondering…
‘Did I ruin the story God was writing for me?’

“Here’s the truth:
the Author already knew the plot twist…
and grace was already written in.”

Recap

“In our first episode, ‘The Author and the Beginning: Why God Wrote You In,’ we learned that God created you with purpose — that He is an intentional Author who’s still writing your story.”

“But what happens when we fall?
When we break the story?”

“That’s what we’re talking about today — how sin entered the story, and why God wasn’t surprised.”

Opening Prayer

“Let’s go to God in prayer.”

“Dear Father,
thank You for this day, and for the opportunity to study Your perfect Word.

I pray that Your Spirit would guide my words and prepare the hearts of those listening.

Let us see how, even from the beginning, Your plan for grace was already written in.

In Jesus’ name, amen.”

The Reality of Sin

“The reality is, we all mess up.
We all fall short.”

“We might think we’re ‘good people,’ but compared to a perfect and holy God — we aren’t.”

Scripture — Romans 3:23–24 (ESV)

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

Paul’s Honest Struggle

“Even the Apostle Paul admitted his struggle with sin.”

Scripture — Romans 7:18–21 (ESV)

“For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.

Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.”

“If God could use Paul — a man who once persecuted Christians — He can use you too.”

Going Back to the Beginning

“To understand sin, we have to go back to where it all began — Genesis chapters 2 and 3.”

Scripture — Genesis 2:16–17 (ESV)

“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’”

The Serpent’s Deception

Scripture — Genesis 3:1–5 (ESV)

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, ‘Did God actually say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden”?’

And the woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.”’

But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’”

What Went Wrong

“In Genesis chapter 3, we notice a couple of important things.”

1. Eve adds to God’s command.
She says they can’t even touch the fruit — but God never said that.

2. The serpent twists God’s words.
He plants doubt, making Eve question whether God really meant what He said.

“The serpent mixes truth with deception.
Adam and Eve wouldn’t immediately die, and their eyes would be opened — but that knowledge would come through disobedience, leading to separation from God.”

“Everything the serpent said was designed to make rebellion seem insignificant.”

The Same Lie Today

“That’s the same tactic the enemy uses today.
He makes us question what God really said — or convinces us that sin, or certain sins, aren’t such a big deal anymore.”

“That maybe what was once considered sin… isn’t really sin today.”

“Sin is simply disobeying God’s commands.”

The Fall

Scripture — Genesis 3:6–7 (ESV)

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Shame Enters the Story

“And the moment Adam and Eve disobeyed, shame entered the story.”

“They attempted to cover up their shame.”

“When Adam and Eve sinned, their first instinct was to cover themselves and hide.
That’s what shame does — it makes us want to hide from God.”

Personal Reflection

“I know that struggle personally.
For a long time, I battled a pornography addiction that made me feel completely unworthy to come before God.”

“Like Adam and Eve, I wanted to hide.
I felt stuck… ashamed… and hopeless.”

“And the more distant I felt, the more I pulled away — even though that was the worst thing I could have done.”

God Still Seeks Us

“But even when Adam and Eve hid, God still called out to them.”

Scripture — Genesis 3:9 (ESV)

“But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’”

“Sin separates us from God — but it never stops God from seeking us.”

“He pursued Adam and Eve when they were at their lowest point… and He still pursues you and me today.”

“Because what God desires most is relationship.”

Weekly Reflection
  1. Where have you believed the lie that your mistake disqualified you from God’s love?

  2. Write this down:
‘If Paul wasn’t too broken, then neither am I.’

  3. Memorize this verse — Romans 5:8:

“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Closing & Teaser

“In our next episode, we’ll see how God’s grace didn’t just cover the fall — it rewrote the story.”

“We’ll discover how grace bridges the gap between failure and purpose.”

“Shalom, everyone — see you in the next episode.”
